About the Project

This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about the surname HILDRETH and its variants. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect. Please contact the project leader, add categories to your profiles, add your questions to the bulletin board, add details of your name research, etc.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual teams can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Hildreth's), by time period (18th Century Hildreth's), or by topic (Hildreth DNA, Hildreth Occupations, Hildreth Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Also see the related surnames and surname variants.

Background Information on the Name Hildreth

Origins of Hildreths in America

It appears that the early Hildreths in America descend from two immigrants, Richard and Thomas. It is not yet known how these two immigrants were related, but DNA results have shown that there is a connection. Their birthplaces in England are not known, however, in 1891, 30% of all Hildreths lived in Yorkshire.

  • Richard, b. ca. 1605, who probably came to Massachusetts in about 1635, (no official records mention him until May 10, 1643), and died in 1693 in Chelmsford.
  • Thomas, who also came to Massachusetts in about 1635 but moved on to become one of the founders of Southampton, New York. The first mention of Thomas is in 1643 and the last is in October of 1657 concerning his death.

The Hildreth Name

Meaning of the Name

One theory is that the name was originally from an Anglo-Saxon, pre 7th Century personal name, "Hildraeth" comprised of the elements "Hild" meaning "battle" and "raed" - "counsel." This name died out but was reintroduced in about the 14th century. Another theory is that the name Hildreth came from Northern England and may be a variant of the first name "Eldridge," which comes from a completely different Anglo-Saxon root: "Aedelric", a personal compound which translates as "noble ruler."

Distribution of the Name in America

In 1840, the US Census showed that most Hildreths were concentrated in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New York, with a number also in Ohio. By 1920, the US Census shows that Hildreths were concentrated in Massachusetts, New York and California, although there was a substantial number in the Midwest, Texas and Alabama.

Related Surnames and Surname Variants

Spelling of this name can sometimes be "creative." The name, just in the records of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, has been spelled: Heldreth, Heldrith, Heldereth, Heldreath, Helldreth, Hildretch, Hildreth, Hildrith, Hilldereth, Hilldreath, Hilldreth, Hilldrith, Hildrick. In other places, it also appears as: Hildred, Hildich, Hildrak, Hildre, and Huldreth, and probably many others. The name has also been spelled Hildret, especially in New York and the South. The moral of the story is, if you are searching for this name, use very loose parameters or include wildcards.

The Hildreth DNA Study

There was a DNA study underway for Hildreth and related names, including: Heldderick, Heldreth, Heldrick, Hilderick, Hildreath, Hildreth, Hildrith, and Hyldreth. The DNA project objectives are:

(1.) To determine if Richard Hildreth b. 1605 in England, d. 23 Feb 1693 in Chelmsford, MA, and Thomas Hildreth b. unk. in England, and d. 1657 in Southampton, LI, NY are closely related, and the time to their most recent common ancestor(MRCA).
(2) Permit those with the surname Hildreth, or a variation thereof, to ascertain if they are descendants of either Richard or Thomas Hildreth, or if they descend from another Hildreth branch with a common ancestor (CA) perhaps further back in time.

Its status is unknown.

Last name: Hildred

Recorded in the spellings of Hildred and Hildreth, this is an English surname. The origination is from the Anglo-Saxon pre 7th Century personal name "Hildraeth" comprised of the elements "Hild" meaning "battle" and "raed" - "counsel".The name is first recorded circa 700 a.d. with St Hildrid of Barking Abbey, Essex, but with the Norman Conquest of 1066, seems to have largely fallen into disuse. The "modern" surname probably forms part of the English revival in the 13th Century, although it is also possible that the name was reintroduced into England by the Flemish Weavers circa 1400-1500. This may be borne out by the recording of Peter Hyldicke who married Katherin Tood at the church of St. Katherin by the Tower (of London) on June 1st 1606. Other recordings include Richard Hildred, a christening witness at St. Ann's Soho, on November 21st 1703, Charles Hildred recorded at St. Botolphs, London on April 21 1706, and John Hildreth who married Mary Fawbery at St. Benets, Pauls Wharf, London on October 29th 1724. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Ann Hildrith, which was dated May 19th 1695, christened at St. Ann's Church, Soho, Westminster, during the reign of King William 111 of Orange and England, 1689 - 1702. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
